The outbreak of World War I. Fisherman Ivo goes to the front, and leaves his wife Marija in the care of his best friend Nikola, who is lame and therefore not mobilised. News comes of Ivo’s death and Nikola, who has always been in love with Marija, marries her. However, Ivo was a prisoner of war for a long time, and has not been able to contact his family. He returns to the village on the day of Marija giving birth.

Director Karl Junghans worked slowly and without a storyboard, which is why he was replaced by the American-Czech director F. W. Kraemera. The filming took place in Split, Solin, Šibenik, Trogir, and on the island of Vis, mostly in Komiža. It was screened at the Venice International Film Festival in 1936.
