What is Balthazar’s workshop?
The traditional Professor Balthazar’s Adventure Laboratory is a film workshop, which, for the 13th time this summer, will open its doors to a new generation of young animated film fans. We welcome all youngsters aged 7 to 12 who are looking for new things, experimenting, and exciting film ventures.
What can you expect from the workshop?
Once upon a time lived a beautiful princess, with cheeks as red as roses, and skin as white as snow. This is why they named her Snow White. This is, of course, from a famous animated film that we have all seen and retold a hundred times. But did you know that this was the first feature animated film? Did you know that Mickey Mouse, the name of one of the most popular cartoon characters, is also the title of the first animated sound film? Have you ever wondered what animated film actually is? How is it different from feature films or documentary films? An animated film is not just any type of animation - it has to have a plot, and the characters and background are drawn. If you are ready to give life to a range of your drawings, tell a story through movement, let your imagination free with us, and breathe in the love for film art, Professor Baltazar’s Adventure Laboratory is eagerly awaiting you.
The workshop is designed as a one-week programme where children will be introduced to the techniques of making and producing animated film. All of the segments of this process are elaborated: developing a story, developing the script, creating characters and their personalities, the basics of animation and production. A part of the introduction will be dedicated to classic animation, and simple and fun exercises to understand the basic principles and rules of animation, such as squash & stretch, etc. The workshop will give the participant a chance to see segments of some of the highest quality professional and amateur animated films. After the introduction and the basics, we will continue by making a short jingle for Pulica, where the participants of the workshop will work with a mentor to go through all of the segments they have learnt in the “theoretical” introduction. The technique the participants will be introduced to is a combination of CGI and Cut-Out animation. The elements and the basis for the jingle will already be prepared, and the participants will put their work and ideas forward to influence their final composition, production and post-production.
The participants will be working with pre-defined characters, so that more time can be spent on animating them and creating a film with existing elements. We will also work with sound segments of animation (whirring, music, voice-overs). The practical part of recording whirrs and voice-overs for jingles will be done following a presentation and an explanation, and we will learn how to implement music into the final product in the most practical way. Along with all of these segments, we have to emphasise that the focus of the workshop will be independent and low-budget production, as well as technical solutions and tricks these productions use to realise their projects as best and as professional as possible. The participants will learn how they can use a computer and several computer programs to start making their animated films.
When and where?
Kindergarten Rin Tin Tin Pula (Uspon Svetog Stjepana 1 street), from 11 July to 19 July (excluding Saturday, 14 July and Sunday, 15 July, 2018). Morning workshops are reserved for children aged 7 to 9 years old, and afternoon workshops for those between 10 to 12 years old.
When is the deadline for applications and the number of participants?
The deadline for applications is 27 June. The number of adventurers is limited to 30, in two groups of 15 participants, and dates will be filled in the order in which the applications have been received. Should all free places be filled before the set closing date, applications received after that time will not be considered. After applications close, you will receive all the information needed.
How can I apply and how much is the attendance fee?
The attendance fee is 400 HRK, and 300 HRK for each additional child from the same family. The call for applications is announced on 1 June.

Nina Šestanović graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the class of professor Peruško Bogdanić in 2009. She has exhibited at a number of group and independent exhibitions, with notable participation at exhibitions in her home town of Lumbarda, Korčula, Pelješac, Zagreb and Auckland, as well as the group exhibitions in Split (Tampon Generation) and in Zagreb. She won the competition 50 Years of Renault in Croatia in 2010, and has participated in numerous projects, such as mural painting and various events (Avenues of the World, Zagreb, 2011). She worked at Dubrava Children’s Theatre as workshop leader and stage designer from 2008 to 2013. After her move to New Zealand, she worked with children on art workshops focusing on ecology and preservation of tradition. She now lives and works in Pula. |

Petra Zlonoga graduated in graphic design from the School of Design in 2007, and has spent two years working in marketing, after which she started working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. In 2009, she began her studies of Animated Film and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, earning her MA in 2011. During her studies, she made 4 films: Daniil Ivanovich, Marry Me (2007), Gregor (2010), for which she received the Rector’s Award, Fox (2010), and Daniil Ivanovich, You Are Free (2011 - graduation film), which received the award for Best Original Screenplay at the Festival of Croatian Animated Film in 2012. In 2014, she finished her first author film Hunger, produced by Bonobostudio, which was screened at 60 festivals and has won several awards and recognitions. In 2016, she finished her animated-experimental film Dota, produced by Kinoklub Zagreb. The same year, she won the Oktavijan Award for Best Experimental Film at Croatian Film Days, as well as several recognitions at festivals in the region and beyond. In the last several years, she has also been teaching, and has led a number of animation workshops for children, students, and film professionals. |
