60 YEARS OF THE FESTIVAL AND CROATIAN FILM SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE HELD

A scientific conference under the title “60 years of the Pula Film Festival and Croatian film” was held at the Central Croatian Cultural and Publishing Society (CCCPS) in Zagreb on January 19, 2013. The first cinematic conference in the history of the CCCPS, organized within the scope of activity of the Theatre and Film Department, was dedicated to the important anniversary of the longest-lived national film festival in the world which is also the most-visited Croatian cultural festival. The organization board was made up of Hrvoje Turković, Nikica Gilić, Bruno Kragić and Zlatko Vidačković (president). The conference was open to the public and there was a discussion round after each of the ten fifteen-minute presentations.

In the first part of the conference Dejan Kosanović held a presentation on Pula as a national festival of international importance. Slaven Zečević discussed Branko Bauer’s documentary First National Film Revue, Tomislav Šakić tackled the topic of Croatian film of the 1950s between classical style and early modernism, Krunoslav Lučić talked about classical and modernist Croatian feature film in terms of its style, and Bruno Kragić about the classical style in Croatian film historiographies.

In the second part of the conference (which started at 2:30p.m.) Irena Paulus talked about two scores for the film The Battle of Neretva (the American version was composed by legendary Bernard Herrmann), Nikica Gilić about Dejan Šorak’s films The Officer with a Rose and The Best, Marijan Krivak about Croatian film and film criticism of the 1990s, Nikša Sviličić about causality of the semiotic and narratological aspects of the structure of film discourse and paradigms of the Croatian feature film reception from 1991 to 2012, and Zlatko Vidačković about Croatian cinema from 2007 to 2012.

The CCCPS will publish a collection of works presented at the conference and it will be presented at the 60th Pula Film Festival that will take place from July 13 – 27 this year.
