So as not to lose the diseased grandpa’s American pension after the death of the grandma, the family decides to get a substitute grandma...

SUMMARY: Grandpa’s American pension received by his widow is the only source of income for a family in Lika. After the old woman dies, their existence is seriously in jeopardy. Head of household Mane, together with his son Todor and brother Jojo, come up with an interesting plan: they will find a substitute grandma! Everyone is thrilled with the plan except Branko, Jojo’s son, whose only wish is to run as far away from them as possible with his girlfriend...

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT: Inspired by an anecdote I witnessed in a barrack in Maribor in 1989 when a soldier from Montenegro said his family did nothing else but take care of the old grandma so she didn’t die because she received an American pension, I wrote a script in 1999 which became the film 72 Days. Originally envisaged as a comedy, the script kept getting darker and more complex with some new situations and relations between the characters when we started to shoot the film. For this I can partly give credit to the great crew I was lucky to bring together for this project. However, I do think there are many comical elements left which shall make the audience laugh and not too many dark ones that will remind us of what is going on several kilometres from our carefree homes.
